Better late than never! We planned a family vacation to celebrate Barb’s retirement. Barb, John, Kiddo#1, Son-in-law, Kiddo#2, and grandkiddos (ages 5 and 2.5) were all present!
Our trip started off rocky on Saturday morning with a 3.5 hr delay from LAX – boarding the plane only to get off 1.5 hrs later to sit in the terminal another 1.5 hrs. Ended up on a different plane than original. Thankfully we had no connections getting to Maui! We finally arrived at our destination – the Marriott Maui Ocean Club near Kaanapali Beach. We were in a 2 bedroom ocean front villa in the Molokai Tower. Kiddo#1 family were in a 1 bedroom ocean view villa in the Lanai Tower. This resort is about an hour drive from the Maui Kahului Airport.
After a morning taking family photos on Monday, Barb was feeling cold – not unusual really with the late afternoon breeze. Later in the evening, the achiness started. Kiddo#2 went to buy a COVID test (the doctor in her!) and surprise! it was positive. She spent the rest of the week isolating in one of the bedrooms. Thankfully it had its own balcony and an awesome view. Paxlovid was started Tuesday morning. By Thursday, she was feeling close to normal. When we got home on Saturday night, she was still testing positive. We were glad we packed masks just in case! She was wishing she had used them at LAX!

While Barb was isolating, the kiddos and grandkiddos had plenty of pool and beach time. This resort had plenty for the kiddos to keep busy. They walked to Whalers Village a few days and wandered Lahaina oceanfront one. On one of the walks, they saw this sea turtle on the beach.
We had dinner at Mama’s Fish House on John’s birthday (our last night on the island). Thankfully, the tables were far apart and we were by the windows.
Overall a great trip!
As a side note, the Lahaina fire was just a few weeks after our visit. So many memories were made in this village over the years. We hope the families displaced are rebuilding and returning to their home village.
