Decluttering the Stuff for a Decluttered Life in Retirement

2018 Goals

Published on

,

Well, we have decided on 2 goals for each of us, the house, and financial.  Keeping it simple and specific seems to be the best way to do this.

HOUSE
◊
Remove 2018 items from the house/garage.  We think this will be our last year of counting.
◊  Get rid of the air hockey table.

BARB
◊  The always on the list but more reasonable this year, lose 15 pounds during the year.  That’s only 1¼ pounds each month!  That seems doable!!  Tomorrow is Weigh In Day!
◊  Do yoga class/video at least twice a month.  After the shoulder injury, this is something that hasn’t happened in about 6 months so it’s time to get back into it!

JOHN
◊
A weight loss goal of 20 pounds for the year.
◊  Complete another backyard planter.  This is really more of a house goal but that’s ok!

FINANCIAL
◊
Have a no spend month – most likely February.
◊  Decrease our food out budget to average $400 per month.

I would love to know how your no spend month went?

It was very eye opening. We realized we like our social life and aren’t willing to cut it completely out to save a few (or more) dollars. We do spend less now because of it.

  2. I like your goals. I’m sure you guys will reach these, no problem 😀

This year my focus will be on my digital mountain, and I WILL be counting every app, photo, email, bookmarks and other files… so yeah… I should exceed 2018 by a mile 😆 decluttering other stuff… I will struggle for sure 😳

Our computers are also something we discussed but felt it would be harder to track. We each have our own desktop and were thinking a set amount of time to do digital decluttering, maybe just 15 minutes a week so that it would be attainable, and therefore, more likely to occur. If every years old email gets deleted counts as 1, then I should have 2018 in no time too! Maybe I need a separate tally sheet for digital stuff??

      1. I like the separate sheet for digital 😀 it’s what I’ll be doing. I’m setting aside some time every week to.. to do my digital clean up. I’ll be writing about different areas (digital that is) to declutter, through the new weeks… today’s topic was desktop clutter 😉 next will be equivalent on phones/pads I think 🤔

I really like the idea of a no-spend moth. I’m going to try it.

OOPs! No-spend month! But the concept of a moth that is fiscally careful does intrigue me.

If we could only get those other spendthrift bugs to follow suit!

We did find that we had to allow for a certain amount of spending. It was really eye-opening.

These are great goals! I like that you have kept them simple and pretty doable. Well, I’d find 2018 items difficult myself, but you guys seem to be able to declutter lots of things!

When you might be back into the kitchen, I’m sure you will remove more than you think. You’ve gotten used to living without a bunch of stuff.

True… But I’ve also been missing a lot of my kitchen gadgets… 🙂

We’ll be cheering each other on for the 2018 things, and the weight loss!
Who will get rid of the 2018 things first??

I think you! We haven’t been as focused on removing things like we were earlier. We at least think about what we purchase now instead of just getting random stuff.

Found some of your ideas and approaches very helpful. I bought a Fitbit fitness tracker at xmas, this tracks a variety of things when synched with a tablet on bluetooth find it well worth the outlay.

John loves his fitbit – he challenges himself to exceed 20,000 steps a day – he is usually about 17,000.
